I would like to progress my career in quality management – how do I choose the right qualification?

As the quality management industry has only been formally recognised for around 50 years, there are a limited number of qualifications available compared to more established industries such as financial management. However, options for further education are available. A handful of UK universities and business schools offer MSc qualifications – Birmingham City, Portsmouth, Glamorgan, Liverpool, Strathclyde and Aberdeen Business School, for example – but there are currently no UK degree courses dedicated to quality management. Quality management modules are often embedded into business or manufacturing degrees, so make sure you research the course syllabus to determine how much emphasis is actually placed on quality management.

CQI qualifications

The new CQI qualifications are ideal for those hoping to achieve a qualification recognised by employers and based on the CQI Body of Quality Knowledge. The CQI Level 3 introductory qualification is a good choice for those who want a foundation for formal development in their role.

The CQI Level 5 advanced certificates and diploma are ideal for those hoping to develop their career in quality management. The Level 5 diploma provides new and existing quality professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to plan and manage an organisation’s quality management function. The diploma is the only qualification which leads directly to the charted quality professional status, and helps students develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of quality and the quality function within an organisation as a whole.

There are other courses and qualifications available that may not be as quality-focused, but which may be useful for your prospects. For example, Kingston University offers an MSc in leadership and management in health. The first of its kind, the course offers a work-based learning environment for students to meet the needs of those working, or intending to work, in the health and social services.
